La excelente temporada que se realizó en Duval el pasado año llevó a los Jaguars al pick nº 29 de la primera ronda del Draft, y a pesar de ello, pudieron conseguir a uno de los jugadores defensivos que se presentaron al mismo. Taven Bryan un DL que llega a Jacksonville a sumar más “bestialidad” a la ya más que potente defensa con su combinación entre contundente físico y su rapidez y flexibilidad.
En E.E.U.U. le conocen como “Wyoming Wildman” y ahora nosotros vamos a conocer un poco más a este joven prometedor.
Aquí va la conversación con Taven:
- Empecé a jugar al football en cuanto me permitieron entrar en la “Midget League” en Casper, Wyoming, a la edad de 10 años. Honestamente tengo que decir que no se me ocurrió que podría llegar al football profesional hasta mi segundo año en la universidad. Una vez que me gané el puesto de titular en Florida, me di cuenta de que si trabajaba lo suficientemente duro podría tener una oportunidad en la NFL.
En tu tierra natal, Wyoming, fuiste conocido como “Wyoming Wildman” por tus habilidades físicas, ¿te gusta ese apodo? ¿Crees que se mantendrá con los años por tu paso por la NFL? Desde luego ya se pueden ver bastantes camisetas con ese apodo en Florida.
- Sí, me gusta el apodo. Pienso que expresa mi ética y mi motor de trabajo dos áreas de mis formas de jugar de las que estoy muy orgulloso. Espero que el apodo me acompañe también en la NFL, pero me encantaría oír si los fans de España tienen algún nuevo apodo para mí.

¿Notas ya diferencias entre el College Football y la NFL después de tus primeras sesiones de entrenamiento, o es todavía muy pronto para decirlo?
- Si, la velocidad del juego es mucho más rápida, ya que estos son los mejores jugadores universitarios que llegan a profesional. Ahora es un trabajo y una responsabilidad a tiempo completo. Estoy aprendiendo rápido de los mayores, los veteranos tienen algunas técnicas que necesito aprender.
¿Qué influencia ha tenido tu padre, Brandy Bryan, (antiguo Navy SEAL), en tu forma de jugar?
- Él siempre me ha dicho que lo haga lo mejor que pueda, así que cada vez que salgo al campo lo recuerdo e intento hacerlo lo mejor que puedo y soy capaz. Su influencia me ha permitido mantenerme disciplinado al luchar por mis objetivos. Estoy muy agradecido por todas las lecciones que me ha enseñado y puedo dar fe de que no hubiese llegado hasta aquí sin él o mi madre.
¿Hay jugadores a los que conociste en tu época como “Florida Gator” contra los que te encantaría jugar en la NFL?
- Definitivamente estoy esperando ver a «Kiki» (Atlanta Falcons LB Keanu Neal) en esta pretemporada cuando los Falcons vengan aquí para jugar contra nosotros. Si hablamos de alinearme contra un ex compañero de equipo, creo que sería divertido enfrentarme cara a cara con el ex Gator OL D.J. Humphries, que está con los Arizona Cardinals.
¿Hay jugadores en activo en la NFL en los que te fijas? ¿Quién era tu jugador referente cuando eras pequeño?
- No vi mucho football cuando era pequeño, así que no puedo decir que admirara a nadie. Wyoming no tiene un equipo profesional, así que no seguí mucho la NFL. Durante mi tiempo en Florida, era consciente de esta alardeada línea defensiva de Jacksonville y estoy ansioso por aprender de los muchos jugadores talentosos que tenemos en nuestro espacio de línea defensiva.

Por favor, háblanos del momento en que te enteraste que los Jacksonville Jaguars te iban a elegir con su primer pick del Draft.
- Fue un sentimiento increíble. Poder compartirlo con toda mi familia al completo fue una experiencia que creo que no olvidaré jamás. Salir al escenario en Dallas me dejó sin aliento al escuchar a los miles de fanáticos que te animan. Jalen Ramsey también estaba en el draft y estaba en la sala verde con uno de sus ex compañeros de equipo, y después de que me llamaran, vino a felicitarme y me dijo: ‘Bienvenido a la familia’. Fue un momento genial ser inmediatamente recibido en el equipo por uno de los mejores jugadores de la NFL.
¿Cómo han sido tus primeros días como Jaguar? (la ciudad, la franquicia, los compañeros, el equipo técnico,…)
- Jacksonville ha sido genial. No ha supuesto demasiado ajuste para mí, ya que Gainesville está a solo dos horas de distancia. Mis compañeros de equipo han sido muy acogedores y los veteranos han son fácilmente accesibles si tengo alguna pregunta. Nuestra clase de novatos pasa mucho tiempo juntos, así que todos somos muy cercanos.

Los Jaguars rompieron todas las expectativas la temporada pasada llegando a las finales de conferencia. ¿Cuál es el objetivo para esta temporada? ¿Cómo piensas que puedes ayudar a la excelente defensa vista la temporada pasada?
- El objetivo de todo equipo en este punto en la offseason es trabajar para ser mejor que el año pasado. El año pasado, este equipo estuvo a un partido de la Super Bowl. Nuestra mentalidad ahora es mejorar cada día. No queremos mirar demasiado lejos, pero todos sabemos cuál es el objetivo final de este equipo.
Por último, como fans europeos nos sentimos muy afortunados de tener a los Jacksonville Jaguars jugando en Londres cada año. Además esta temporada será un partido muy especial. ¿Cómo te sientes al pensar en jugar en Wembley contra los Eagles, actuales campeones de la Super Bowl?
- Estoy muy emocionado por jugar en Wembley este año. Lo más lejos que he viajado en mi vida es de Wyoming a Florida. Esta será mi primera experiencia fuera de los Estados Unidos. Jugar en un escenario tan grande y estar en contra de los campeones de la Super Bowl será una oportunidad y una experiencia increíble. Tengo muchas ganas de reunirme con algunos fans de Jaguars al otro lado del charco y de aprender todo lo que Londres tiene para ofrecernos.

- I started playing football as soon as I was allowed to join the midget league in Casper, Wyoming at 10 years old. It honestly didn’t occur to me that I could potentially play pro football until my second year at Florida. Once I earned a starting spot, I knew if I worked hard enough that I could have a shot to play in the NFL.
In Wyoming you were known as «Wyoming Wildman» for your physical abilities, do you like this nickname? Do you think it will stick with the NFL fans? I noticed many fans in Florida with tshirts with the nickname.
- I do like the nickname. I think it speaks to my work ethic and motor, two areas of my game that I take a lot of pride in. I hope the nickname sticks in the NFL, but I would love to hear if our fans in Spain have any ideas for a new nickname.
Did you already notice any differences between College Football and the NFL after your first training sessions, or is it still too early to tell?
- The speed of the game is much faster, as these are the best of the best college players playing in the pros. It is a full-time job and responsibility now. I am quickly learning that the older, veteran guys have some techniques that I will need to learn.
What influence has your father, Brandy Bryan, (former Navy SEAL) had on your way of playing football?
- He always told me to do the best that I could, so every time I step onto the field, I remember that and try to do the best I can and am able to do. He has instilled a very strong work ethic in me. This has allowed to me stay disciplined when working towards my goals. I am very appreciative for all the lessons he has taught me and can attest that I would not be here without him or my mom.
Are there players that you met during your time as a Florida Gator that you would love to play against in the NFL?
- I am definitely looking forward to seeing Kiki (Atlanta Falcons LB Keanu Neal) this preseason when the Falcons come here to play us. In terms of lining up against a former teammate, I think it would be fun to go head-to-head with former Gator OL D.J. Humphries, who is with the Arizona Cardinals.
Are there any current NFL players you look up to? Which player was your reference growing up?
- I didn’t watch a lot of football growing up, so I can’t say I looked up to anyone. Wyoming does not have a professional team, so I didn’t watch a lot of the NFL. During my time in Florida, I was aware of this vaunted Jacksonville defensive line and I am very eager to learn from the many talented players we have in our defensive line room.
Please talk us through the moment you found out the Jacksonville Jaguars were picking you as their first round pick.
- It was an incredible feeling. To be able to share it with all of my family and extended family was an experience I do not think I will ever forget. Walking out on the stage in Dallas took my breath away hearing the thousands of fans cheer for you. Jalen Ramsey was at the draft too and was in the green room with one of his former teammates, and after my name was called, he came over and congratulated me and said, ‘Welcome to the family.’ That was a cool moment to be instantly welcomed to the team by one of the best players in the NFL.
How have your first days as a Jacksonville Jaguar been? (the city, the franchise, the teammates, the coaching staff …)
- Jacksonville has been great. It wasn’t too much of an adjustment for me, being that Gainesville is only two hours away. My teammates have all been very welcoming and the veterans have been easily accessible if I have any questions. Our rookie class spends a lot of time together, so we are all very close.
The Jaguars excelled all expectations last season, making it to the conference finals. What is the goal for this season? How do you think you can contribute to the excellent defense from last season?
- Every team’s goal at this point in the offseason is to work to be better than they were last year. Last year, this team was one game away from the Super Bowl. Our mindset now is to get better each day. We do not want to look too far ahead, but we all know what the ultimate goal of this team is.
As fans in Europe, we feel extremely lucky to have the Jaguars play in London every year. This season it will be a very special game. How do you feel about playing at Wembley against the Eagles, the current Super Bowl champions?
- I am very excited to play at Wembley this year. The furthest I have ever travelled in my life is from Wyoming to Florida. This will be my first experience outside of the United States. To be playing on such a large stage and have it be against the defending Super Bowl champions will be an amazing opportunity and experience. I am looking forward to meeting some Jaguars fans across the pond and taking in everything London has to offer.
