Naciste en Kansas y creciste en Missouri, es decir, en estados del Medio Oeste. ¿Influyó esto en tu decisión de jugar en uno de los programas más importantes del medio oeste, los Wisconsin Badgers?
De cierta manera sí que influyó. Estoy orgulloso de ser del Medio Oeste y quería ir a una universidad fuera de casa, pero no muy lejos. Cuando llegó la oferta de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison, me dije a mí mismo que debía aceptar.
Fuiste muy importante para un equipo de Wisconsin que ganó tres títulos de conferencia consecutivos. ¿Qué hizo que el equipo tuviera tanto éxito?
Una de las cosas a las que más atención le prestábamos era a trabajar muy duro en la preparación. Nuestros entrenadores nos explicaban que era vital prepararse para los rivales, entrenar tan fuerte que los partidos fueran la parte fácil. Una vez que empezaban los partidos, sabíamos que íbamos a ganar, por la preparación.
Compartiste vestuario en Wisconsin con Russell Wilsson y JJ Watt. ¿Sabías que se iban a convertir en estrellas de la NFL?
Sí, desde luego que sí. Ambos tienen la misma cualidad que todas las estrellas de la NFL: asegurarte de que trabajas más duro que el resto de jugadores a tu alrededor. Trabajar más duro en el campo, estudiando tape y entrenando. Tanto Russell como JJ tenían claro que iban a dejar su impronta como jugadores de Wisconsin, pero que no iban a parar ahí.
Batiste una gran cantidad de récords en la universidad, entre ellos el de más touchdowns en carrera o touchdowns en total en Division 1. Incluso fuiste uno de los finalistas para el Trofeo Heisman* en 2011. ¿De qué te sientes más orgulloso?
De lo que estoy más orgulloso es de mi perseverancia durante la temporada 2010. Al principio no era titular ni tenía casi tiempo de juego. Una vez que hice las mejoras pertinentes, y dejé claro que iba a trabajar como el que más, despegué y jugué muy bien hasta el final de temporada. La siguiente temporada fue la de mi candidatura al Heisman.
Los Denver Broncos te seleccionaron en la segunda ronda del draft. ¿Te acuerdas de recibir la llamada en la que te dijeron que te habían seleccionado? ¿Qué pasó por tu cabeza?
¡SÍ! Recuerdo la llamada. Lo viví con mi familia, amigos, profesores y mi entrenador del instituto en un hotel en Madison, Wisconsin. Recuerdo que todo el mundo lo estaba pasando bien… todos menos yo.
Estaba demasiado nervioso como para tener conversaciones y ser social. Entonces, recibí una llamada que empezaba por el código de área (303), y debajo ponía Denver, Colorado. Yo crecí siendo fan de los Broncos, y salté y le di un golpe en el hombro a mi padre, y mi familia empezó a aplaudir. En ese momento hablé con John Elway y algunos entrenadores, y oficialmente me convertí en un Bronco de Denver.
Tuviste una buena temporada rookie. ¿Cuál fue para ti la principal diferencia entre jugar en la universidad y en la NFL?
La principal diferencia es la velocidad del partido. En la NFL, todos los jugadores son fuertes, rápidos y trabajadores. Todos los jugadores se preparan muy duro para cada partido, y cada jugador quiere ser el que más fuerte se entrena. En la universodad, cada equipo tiene entre 10 y 25 jugadores sólidos. En la NFL, hay 53 jugadoresnactivos cada jornada, y todos son sólidos.
En Denver jugaste con Peyton Manning. ¿Cómo es jugar con él?
Tengo la suerte de poder decir que he jugado con Peyton Manning. Algo que le podré contar a mi hijo, cuando sea mayor. Jugar con Peyton fue un sueño convertido en realidad. ¡Tuve la oportunidad de jugar con uno de los mejores jugadores de la historia del deporte! Peyton es muy inteligente, y se aseguraba de que cada jugador del equipo estuviera tan preparado como él. Pero, desafortunadamente, nadie podía llegar a su nivel de preparación. Hacía a los demás jugadores mejores. Fue, en cierto momento, la imagen de la NFL.
Los Broncos ganaron la Super bowl hace dos temporadas. ¿Qué les distinguía del resto de la liga?
Viendo la Super Bowl 51 contra los Panthers, vi bastante claro que siempre iban un paso por delante. Estaban muy concentrados y preparados para el partido. Se concentraron en lo que hacían mejor, y lo perfeccionaron.
Hay muchos debates alrededor de la liga sobre el valor de la posición de running back. El año pasado Zeke Elliott hizo una gran temporada, y este año en el draft dos running backs han salido elegidos en las 8 primeras posiciones. ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre este debate?
Sí siento que no hay mucho respeto por la posición de running back en la liga, siendo esa mi posición. Siento que los running backs son vistos como jugadores reemplazables, y que se nos trata así. Esperemos que con el rendimiento de Zeke cambie la percepción en la liga, como se ha probado en el último draft, en el que dos jugadores salieron en el top 8. Espero que eso cambie cómo se nos valora, y que se mantenga.
Mencionaste que querías hablar de como el football construye la sociedad americana. ¿Puedes explicar a qué te refieres?
Lo primero de todo, me gustaría mucho ir a otros países y explicar esto de manera detallada. Yo, junto con otros millones, sé lo importante que la NFL es para la sociedad americana. Cuánto dinero se genera y se da a cada ciudad en la que se juega una Super Bowl. Las ciudades trabajan muy duro para intentar ser la sede de la Super Bowl. Como he explicado, el dinero generado en cierta manera va a la ciudad. Pero, aparte de esto, una vez que empieza la temporada los supermercados, las marcas de cerveza… todos tienen sus ingresos. Además, las ligas de fantasy football general entre 50000 y 70000 MILLONES de dólares por temporada. Me encantaría poder explicar y discutir cómo nuestro deporte permite que las familias se reúnan para ver partidos… Nuestro deporte une a Estados Unidos, al igual que el fútbol en otros países.
¿Qué consejo le darías a un chaval de instituto que quiere llegar a la NFL?
Bueno – creo que hay muchas cualidades que este chico necesita para llegar a la NFL. Si hablara con un grupo de chicos de instituto, les podría explicar lo que se necesita para llegar a la NFL, pero si hablara cara a cara con un chico que realmente aspira a llegar a la NFL, lo primero que le diría es que cuánto desea realmente llegar arriba. Me centraría en que se diera cuenta de por qué quiere jugar en la NFL. Una vez que se diera cuenta, le diría que se asegure de que esa razón le motive cuando las cosas se pongan difíciles, porque eso va a suceder. Esto es lo más importante a la hora de llegar a jugar en la NFL. Si pierdes esa motivación, tus posibilidades de llegar a la NFL son muy poquitas.
En España, el seguimiento por el deporte del football está creciendo exponencialmente. ¿Hay algo que le quieras decir a tus seguidores en España?
Bueno, lo primero, es increíble tener seguidores en España. Estaré siempre agradecido. Quiero añadir que me encanta saber que nuestro deporte se está extendiendo por el mundo. Estoy muy orgulloso de haber jugado en la NFL. ¡Muchas gracias por contactar conmigo!

You were born in Kansas and grew up in Missouri. Did this influence your decision to play for one of the most important Midwestern programs such as the Wisconsin Badgers?
To a certain extent it did. I’m a proud midwestern who wanted to go to college away from home, but not too far away. Once a full ride scholarship was extended my way from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I told myself that I have to take it!
You were a very important part of the Wisconsin team that won 3 consecutive conference titles. What made that team so successful?
One thing that we worked extremely hard at, was focusing extremely hard on our preparation. Our coaches preached to us how important it is to prepare for your upcoming opponent, prepare so hard to where the game is the easy part. So once the game came around, we were very confident that we were going to win, because of our preparation.
You shared a locker room with Russell Wilson and JJ Watt. Did you know they were going to become NFL stars?
Absolutely. Both players share the same quality, that each and every NFL star shares. That quality is making sure that you out work every single player around you. Out work them on the field, in the film room, and on the practice field. So absolutely! Russell and JJ both had their eyes set on making a significant impact as a badger, but not stopping there.
You had all sorts of career records in Wisconsin, such as most career rushing touchdowns or total touchdowns. You were even a finalist for the Heisman trophy * in 2011. What are you most proud of from your college career?
The one thing that I’m proud of myself for is how I persevered in my 2010 season. Early on, I wasn’t the starter and I was barely receiving any playing time. Once I focused in on what I need to improve on, made it known to others that I will out work them, I then took off and played extremely well later on in the 2010 season. From there, I then had my Heisman Finalist 2011 season.
The Denver Broncos selected you in the second round of the draft. Do you remember receiving the call from the team to let you know you were selected by them? What went through your head?
YES! I do remember the phone call. I was having a gathering in a banquet hall of a hotel in Madison, Wisconsin. This gathering included family, friends, teachers, and my high school coach! I remember that everyone was enjoying their time, and I wasn’t. I was too nervous to hold conversations, and socially engage with others in the room. Until, the phone call came in. The phone number had a (303) area code, so under it it said, Denver, Colorado. Growing up a Broncos fan, I immediately jumped up hit my dad on his shoulder and my family immediately started cheering. From there, I then spoke with John Elway and a few coaches, and then officially became a Denver Bronco.
You had a good rookie season. What was the main difference for you between playing in college and in the NFL?
The main difference from college and the NFL, is the speed of the game. In the NFL, every player is fast, strong, and a hard worker. Every player prepares extremely hard for the game, and each player tries to outwork everyone! In college, each team only has about 10-25 solid players. The NFL is different, all 53 active players are solid players!
You shared the field with Peyton Manning. What is it like to play with him?
I am very fortunate to say I played side by side with Peyton Manning. Something I will tell my son, once he gets older. Playing football with Peyton was honestly a dream come true. I had the opportunity to play with one of the best players in the history of the game! Peyton was a very smart player, who took a lot of pride in making sure every player on his team, prepared just as hard as him. But unfortunately, no one, prepared as hard as Peyton, because Peyton made sure to outwork and prepare everyone. He made each player, better. He, at one point, was the face of the NFL.
The Broncos became Super Bowl winners two seasons ago. What separated them from the rest of the league?
Their on the field, and film room preparation. Watching them play the Panthers, in Superbowl 51, I could tell that they were always a step ahead. They were extremely prepared, and that’s what they focused on leading up to the Superbowl game! They focused in on what their craft is, and they perfected it.
There have been many debates around the NFL about the value of the position of running back. Last year Zeke Elliot had a great season and in this year’s draft two running back were selected in the top 8. What is your opinion on this matter?
I do feel as if there isn’t a great amount of respect around the running back position, and that of course is because I played running back. But, I do feel as if running backs are viewed as expendable players, and treated just that way. Hopefully, with Zeke’s performance, there’s a new perception when it comes to running backs in the NFL. What may have proved that is the latest draft, two running backs going in the top 8. That may change the way they are viewed, and hopefully it will stay that way.
You mentioned you wanted to talk about how football constructs American society. Could you explain what you mean by this?
Well first off, I’d love to go around other countries explaining this in a more in depth way. I, along with millions of others, know how important the NFL is to our American society. How much money is generated and then given back to each city, each time a Superbowl is played. Cities work extremely hard, trying to host the Superbowl game. As just explained, all of the money generated, in some way, finds its way back into the city. But besides that, once the NFL season rolls around, grocery stores, name brand chips, name brand beers etc, are all chomping at the bit. Along with that, fantasy football comes to life, generating around 50-70 BILLION dollars a football season. That money, in some ways, finds it way back into our society. I would love to explain more if given the opportunity, because as of right now, I have only touched on the money that is brought in. From there, I can go on to discuss how the sport enables families to host family gatherings etc. The sport brings America together, just like the sport of soccer in other countries.
What advice would you give to a high school kid that wants to become an NFL player?
Well—I believe that there are many qualities that this high schooler must have in order to make it to the NFL. Speaking to an audience of high schoolers, I’d make sure to explain to them what it takes to make it into the NFL. But if I were given the opportunity to speak to one kid who aspires to play in the NFL, I would ask him first, how badly he wants it. I would focus hard on getting him to realize why he wants to play in the NFL. As soon as he grasps his why, I’d tell him to make sure that that is what motivates you when football gets hard—because it will get hard. My advice would be, that you must find your why. That is the most important thing when it comes to playing in the NFL. As soon as you lose your why, you will lose your motivation, and as soon as that happens, your chances of making it into the NFL are extremely slim.
In Spain the love for the game of football is growing exponentially. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans in Spain?
First off, I would like to say that it is extremely humbling to know that I have fans in Spain. I am forever grateful. Next, I would like to say that I am pleased to find out that American football is spreading worldwide. I am very proud that I had the opportunity to play in the NFL. Also, as earlier discussed, very humbled to know that you guys reached out to me!
